Our adventure through the Akamas Mountains began at the serene coastline where hundreds of hand-stacked stone cairns created a surreal, meditative landscape. Each delicate tower, perfectly balanced, whispered stories of past travellers who paused to leave a mark by the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.
Climbing inland, the terrain turned rugged and raw. The dusty, winding tracks led us through sun-scorched hills and arid ridges, surrounded by dramatic mountain views under a piercing blue sky.
Finally, from one of the highest viewpoints, the full majesty of the Akamas unfolded beneath us – deep green forests stretching to the edge of the coastline, with our 4x4 perched on the trail like a true explorer’s chariot. The turquoise sea in the distance shimmered under the summer sun, reminding us how wild and untouched this corner of Cyprus remains.
A day of contrasts – from tranquil stone gardens to adrenaline-pumping climbs – and a reminder that some of nature’s best treasures are found off the beaten track.
